Let\u2019s go back to school and take a quiz to find out who invented Mother\u2019s Day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u0391) Ann Reeves Jarvis<\/p>\n B) Julia Ward Howe<\/p>\n C) Anna Jarvis\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n D) Some women in antiquity<\/p>\n In Ancient Greece, motherhood was very revered, therefore they honored Rhea, the Mother of Gods.<\/p>\n In the 20th<\/sup> century, Anna Jarvis is considered the mother of Mother\u2019s Day.<\/b> And, it runs in the family!<\/p>\n Her mother, Ann Jarvis<\/a>, created Mothers\u2019 Day Work Clubs<\/b> just before the Civil War, teaching local women how to take care of their children.<\/p>\n Later, in 1869, Jarvis invented Mothers\u2019 Friendship Day, <\/b>where mothers met during the Civil War with military men, lobbying for peace. Nobody can speak as eloquently as a mother about war casualties. It is they who are left behind without sons and husbands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In 1870, the suffragette Julia Ward Howe <\/b>wrote the \u201cMother\u2019s Day Proclamation\u201d<\/b>, a call to action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. Then, Anna Jarvis<\/b> inherited the task of creating an official Mother\u2019s Day, which happened in 1905. After gaining financial backing<\/a> from a Philadelphia businessman named John Wanamaker, she organized the first official Mother\u2019s Day celebration in May 1908. Following her numerous campaigns and letters, the day began to be celebrated in different states, when finally, in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson <\/b>officially established the second Sunday of May as Mother\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n Today, this holiday is more love-centered rather than politically oriented. It\u2019s a cozy family day, that honors the woman that gave us life. Different countries have developed their own unique way of celebrating<\/a>.<\/p>\n In Mexico,<\/b> El D\u00eda de la Madre has its own soundtrack. On May 10, families hire bands to come to perform at their homes. Moms request their favorite songs and are treated to serenades, as well as some delicious tamales and atole, which is a hot drink made of corn and usually\u2026 chocolate. We\u2019d love to try it!<\/p>\n In the UK<\/b>, they bake the traditional Simnel Cake<\/b> made with spices, dried fruits and marzipan balls on top. Yummy\u2026<\/p>\n In the Dominican Republic<\/b>, they organize festivities with music, food and dance, honoring multiple generations of mothers. In India<\/b>, apart from the usual holiday, they also celebrate the 10-day long Durga Puja festival<\/b>, where \u201cDivine Mother\u201d Durga is honored through prayers, food and music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Polish<\/b> \u201cDzie\u0144 Matki\u201d<\/b> <\/b>is celebrated at school where children present their moms with sheets of paper known as \u201claurki\u201d, decorated with flowers and special messages of love. It is also an official holiday, so shopping is not an option on that day. In Australia<\/b>, they wear colorful carnations if their mothers are living and white carnations if their mothers are deceased. Last but not least, Thai<\/b> Mother\u2019s Day is on Thailand\u2019s Queen Sirikit\u2019s birthday and has an altruistic character as children often honor their own mothers by giving alms to monks.<\/p>\nMother\u2019s Day was created by:<\/h2>\n
